HEROES JOURNEYS : "I keep coming back for more"
October 2024 marks the fifth edition of the Rwandan Epic—a boutique multi-stage MTB race that challenges participants to push their limits while discovering the breathtaking landscapes of Rwanda.
To celebrate this milestone, we’re introducing the Heroes Series: over the next few weeks, we’ll share stories from various participants.

Meet David, a 50-year-old engineer and sports enthusiast who has participated in every Rwandan Epic since its inception in 2020. He’s back for his fifth race this October.
"To say it gets easier every year would be a lie," he jokes during our phone call. "I’ve done this race in every condition—from super humid to freezing cold; you never know what you’re going to get! But one thing you can always count on is the local supporters cheering you along the entire 300km course."
David moved from the UK to Kenya 15 years ago, seeking a change of scenery. He settled in Nairobi with his wife Joanne and started his own engineering consultancy, focusing on power projects in Africa.
Originally, his love for biking took a backseat to his passion for competitive sailing. Biking began as a way to stay fit for sailing during the off-season, but it quickly grew into something more. Frustrated by the lack of availability of proper bikes available in Kenya, he even opened his own bike shop to fill the gap.
In the UK, David was all about road biking. But moving to Kenya opened his eyes to the joys of off-road cycling. "There’s an amazing trail network literally down the road—how could I not explore it?" Given his competitive nature, his casual rides soon turned into a quest for the next race.
Compared to other events, David appreciates the Rwandan Epic for its challenging duration and technical courses. "It’s clear that a proper mountain bike enthusiast has put a lot of thought into these trails; Simon goes where no one else will to build something special for us!"
David recalls his most challenging experience two years ago when his usual race partner dropped out at the last minute. He paired up with an experienced, local Kenyan friend instead. "This guy really pushed me to go beyond my limits, and I absolutely loved the challenge!"

• Due to the altitude, proper nutrition and hydration are crucial throughout the race.
• Bring specific bike spares; while there are amazing mechanics on hand, it’s up to you to carry any specialized parts that might not be available in Rwanda.
